Comments:  When we first looked at this coin we almost passed, then we examined it in more detail and decided to take a chance on it grading because the toning looks like legitimate bag toning.  With New Orleans dollars there is often the mottled look of just gunk on the coins and that is what you see on the reverse of this coin.

But the coin has excellent detail and is a full to nearly full strike, and the obverse device still shows some frostiness.  The coin is free of serious bag marks and the grade seems appropriate if we subtract a little for the poor color.

Speculative History

To us this coin has some of the earmarks of a bag toned coin.  The crescent shape that runs from about 5 o'clock up through 4 o'clock is probably from another coin overlapping this one.  The color is heaviest at the rim and fades toward the outside of the lower hair.

Stages and Colors

This coin shows signs of early to middle stage bag toning, with some moisture damage thrown in for free.  The normal silver color in the center transitions to light blue, to mint green, and then to orange.  Some of the colors are muted because of moisture damage.
