Obverse Die 24

Primary Characteristics

Obverse die 24 appears only in one VAM when coupled with reverse die l.  This is not a difficult die to identify and the reverse die makes it even more straightforward.

On die 24 the 188 in the date is doubled.  The first 1 is doubled below the upper crossbar.  The first 8 is doubled at the top inside and right outside of the upper loop, and the bottom outside of the lower loop. The second 8 is doubled at the right outside of the upper loop.

While this description seems straightforward, some of the doubling is surface doubling and you will need to be able to identify that type doubling.

Die Crack Characteristics

Obverse Die 24 is associated only with VAM 35 and reverse die i.  We have thirteen examples ranging from Good 04 through MS 64+, so a wide range of coins to examine.

The coins exhibit die cracks at the bottom through the date, and at the top from eleven to one o'clock.  The die cracks around the date are seen as low as an AU 50 coin, and on some coins approach being die breaks.
