Comments: You need to look under all the color and discoloration to realize that this coin has few bag marks and might even be a Mint State 64 coin. The graders might have knocked off some points for eye appeal, but to us it is a very nice coin, especially for study of grades and toning.
Speculative History
This coin was probably stored at the Mint and was pressed against the outside of the bag in a moist environment. How the coin was positioned in the bag leads to some speculation because the reverse is nearing terminal coloration. The obverse is obviously heavily toned and has been subjected to moisture. How the areas on the cheek and to the right of the date lost their coloration is also interesting.
Stages and Colors
For us this coin has a little bit of everything going. On the obverse there are dark areas behind the cap where the coloration is beginning to turn to black, indicating the last stages of toning. But in front of and on the face there is some earlier toning and the colors are right for bag toning.
But the reverse is a different story, and a sad one. Several areas show signs of terminal coloration, always black. There is little else on the reverse except final stages of toning.
Like it or not, there is more of a story here than meets the eye and a lot to learn.
