The Spiked 8 Varieties of 1881-O
The "Spiked 8" group deserves a lot of attention because it appears so frequently. The "Spiked 8" versions of the 1881-O became so common that they are not mentioned in the title of most varieties. A common feature of almost half of the 1881-O VAMs, you can only determine which VAMs have this trait by reading the detailed descriptions.
It becomes obvious that such a common trait can help with grouping but can not be the final determinant of variety. That distinction most often comes from the pairing with a reverse die and some unique feature on the reverse. It is also helpful to think of the distinctions as layered with either one or two features beyond the Spiked 8.
However, in a very few cases a reverse feature can be shared by multiple dies, such as O/O mint marks or a doubled profile. In at least one VAM it has now been recognized that there are spikes in both 8s. It is also possible for coins to share features that place them in more than one grouping such as double ear varieties. These can be both spiked 8 and double ear varieties.
VAMworld recognizes ten different groupings and we will describe them in ways that will help identify them visually. In cases where our collection is lacking examples we will link back to VAMworld to temporarily provide those examples.

VAM 1A - Spiked 8
This is the core or basic Spiked 8 VAM where the only obverse or reverse feature is the spike in the upper loop of the first 8.
The obverse is die 1, and the reverse is die a.
VAM 1D - Pummeled or Flaky Eye
While this is technically in this group, the distinguishing feature is the distortion at the front of the eye and on the nose.
The obverse is die 1, and the reverse is die a.
VAM 1H - Die Gouge in Inner Wing #2
The reverse of this VAM is believed to be shared with VAM 34A. While there are distinguishable gouge marks on the inner wing, there are a lot of other features to look for while identifying this VAM. With die cracks they could wear away fairly quickly, so the inner wing issues become more important.
In addition to the wing gouges, look for a prominent die crack on the cheek that runs from the corner of the mouth all the way down to the lower hair. Then look for a die crack running vertically through the tip of the nose.
This die was clashed and it is believed the clash was polished out leaving only faint traces of the clashing. There is another less prominent die crack running horizontally above the bow on the reverse.
The obverse is die 1, and the reverse is die a.
VAM 15 - Doubled 1
The distinguishing feature of this VAM is the second 1 which is doubled slightly at the top left of the upper crossbar, and as a notch on the lower right side of the vertical shaft. In these photographs the notch on the vertical shaft is difficult to see, but there.
The obverse is die 7, and the reverse is die a.
VAM 20 - Doubled 18
Like many other date doubling VAMs the issue rests with which digits and where they are doubled. With VAM 20 the first 1 is doubled slightly at the top right of the vertical shaft. The first 8 is doubled at top and right inside and bottom outside of the lower loop with a die chip at top left inside of upper loop at about 10 o'clock.
The obverse is die 12, and the reverse is die a.
VAM 24 - Doubled Second 1
On some occasions multiple die pairs exist for a VAM and that is the case with VAM 24. In the case of VAM 24 there is a clear indicator of die swapping because with Die 1 the obverse and reverse are not clashed, while on Die 2 shows some signs of clashing.
The primary indicator for this VAM is a notch on the left side of the vertical shaft of the last 1. With Die pair 1 there is a vertical die scratch above the top cotton leaf.
The obverse is die 14, and the reverse is die a.
VAM 28 - Doubled Profile
Like VAM 24 there are two die pairs for VAM 28. The profile doubling is very distinct and shows clearly at the front of the lips like a double set of lips. The doubling can extend out from there, but it is most distinct at the front of the top lip.
Die 1 - The Liberty head profile is slightly doubled from the forehead to the chin. The phrygian cap is weakly doubled at the top edges. There is a spike in the upper loop of both eights. There is a die marker of a scratch at the back of the eye at the hair line.
Die 2 - Die chip at top left inside of the left 8 upper loop. There is a die marker of a diagonal die scratch below the right rear of the Phrygian cap.
One observation about our collection is that a disproportionate number of DMPL and PL coins are VAM 28s and you can almost always start your VAM identification with DMPL and PL coins with this VAM.
The obverse is die 17, and the reverse is die a.
VAM 52 - Doubled 18-1
VAM 52 is differentiated by a doubling of the 18-1 in the date. The left 1 is slightly doubled at top right; the left 8 at the bottom outside of the lower loop with a short die chip at the top left inside of the upper loop; and the right 1 at the top of the upper crossbar with a slight notch at the lower left of the vertical shaft.
The obverse is die 33, and the reverse is die a.
VAM 53 - Doubled 18
VAM 53 has a doubled 18 with the left 1 slightly doubled at the top right, and the left 8 at the top outside, and with a short die chip at the top left inside of the upper loop.

On the reverse on later die stages a die crack develops that goes from the left ribbon down across the lower edge of the mint mark.
The obverse is die 34, and the reverse is die a.
VAM 65 - Doubled 18-1
VAM 53 has the 18-1 doubled in the date, with the left 1 doubled slightly at the top right. The left 8 has a flat doubled top outside of the upper loop.
