Speculative History
This coin was probably stored at the Mint and was pressed against the outside of the Mint bag. The dark parallel lines on the cheek appear to be from the cloth weaving.
We can only speculate that it was also stored in a place where exposure to moisture and air were limited because of the slow progression of the colors.
Stages and Colors
This is a good coin for an education as it has several interesting and unusual features. In addition to almost having a monochromatic obverse, the coin has traces of the bag fabric on the cheek.
These would be clear indicators that this coin was colored in a Mint bag. There is a little more dramatic color in a few spots in front of the mouth and above the LIBERTY, but these are small. The dominant color is light cyan blue, an early stage two color. The few other colors are orange and red, also stage two colors.
The lack of coloration on the reverse is helpful in pinpointing this as a stage two coin.
