Speculative History
When collectors talk about toned coins this is what we believe comes to mind most often The crescent shaped coin that we believe was held in a Mint bag until released. And that speculation would fit this coin.
Our only concern is that the reverse of the coin is completely free of any toning. While possible it does raise a few questions about storage and how this was possible. One way would be for the coin to have been completely parallel to the coin bag, but only partially exposed on the face. Like most we will never know.
Stages and Colors
The deep reds and gold in the coin really enhance the eye appeal of this one and give it a fiery look. But there is a little more to the story.
Under magnification you will see that the colors go from stage 0, or no color around the center of the device and progress to peach, to cyan, to yellow, to orange, to magenta, and finally into blue. These are all indicators of a late second stage to early third stage coin.
What adds to the coin's appeal is that it retains many of the color spectrum through both first and second stages.
