Comments:  This is a coin that we might fight to have classified as a Mint State 60.  If it is circulated then it is so lightly circulated that the device and fields show no sign of it.

The toning is indicative of bag toning, and the crescent shape would also indicate that this coin was partially exposed between other coins.

Like several of our other VAM 1E coins this one is lightly clashed on the reverse, but also lightly clashed on the obverse.  It seems unlikely that the clashing would remain if this were a circulated coin.

Speculative History

One of the things that may lead the graders to give this coin an AU58 grade is the dull appearance of the toned area.  Often the toning will retain enough reflectiveness to make the colors more vibrant.  But in this case they are dulled on both the obverse and reverse.

Stages and Colors

It is a little more difficult to tell because of the lack of luster, but we believe the color sequence on both sides of the coin would indicate that this is a bag toned coin.
