Comments: The obverse bag marks and less than optimal eye appeal pigeon hole this coin in its grade. Although we would like something higher, it is probably set correctly. But what a great coin. Short of a two-sided monster toned coin it doesn't get much better than this.
Speculative History
There are several components to the toning on the reverse of this coin. First, at one time it was probably completely colored from the deep blue at about seven o'clock up through the amber color at two o'clock. Then from the center of the coin just above the eagle's legs to twelve o'clock something came in contact with the coin that removed some of the color. And finally, there are some hints as to the abrasive substance in the pattern that remains. We believe the abrasive was a fabric that left a weave pattern on the coin.
There is no way to know for sure, but this scenario sounds plausible to us.

Stages and Colors
The most obvious colors in the spectrum are gold, magenta, and deep blue. The gold is the most difficult to see, but it is mixed in with the magenta. But we also think there is enough deep magenta mixed in to call this a fourth stage toned coin. One missing color from the spectrum is green, but this seems to be happenstance.
Toward the top of the coin there are areas of orange and yellow that are back in the second stage of toning. So the coin was exposed disproportionately toward the bottom and somewhat shielded toward the top.
