Comments: It is easy to let the colors overwhelm the analysis of this coin and you need to look through all the color to see the detail. The reverse of the coin is probably higher than a MS 62, but the bag marks on the obverse definitely bring the rating back in focus.
This is a great coin, but it is a solid Mint State 62.
Speculative History
We need to understand the toning process much better to speculate very much about how this toning was acquired, but it is spectacular. But the color spectrum is that of bag toning.
What is most confusing is the bands of color are in straight lines as if something protected the yellow/gold band from exposure. Adding to the mystery is the lack of color on the reverse.
Stages and Colors
The colors in this coin are indicative of toning acquired in a mint bag. The lack of any crescent shaped areas would indicate that no coins were overlaid over this one during the time it acquired its color.
The yellow/gold band is in the earliest stages and then the toning becomes more dramatic as you move toward 2 o'clock and 8 o'clock.
