Comments: If you examine the images below with the color dropped out, or look very carefully you can see that the dark toning is not masking damage. This is a good, solid MS64 with few bag marks. The coin probably ranks near the top of the grade and to us the toning adds appeal.
Several of our VAM 53 coins have similar golden toning which indicates to us similar storage conditions and lends validity to the color.
Speculative History
While one of these colors can be associated with bag toning, usually the spectrum involved is not. The absence of any color on the reverse and no wrapper marks also rule out roll toning. Whatever the source it was not overly corrosive because this is early toning not late.

Like some of our other VAM 53 toned coins, when we look at this coin it is like looking at someone standing in front of a warm fire. The concentration of the golden glow toward the lower left and then fading across the coin from there gives the coin a great appearance.
Not easily seen is the little bit of spectrum at about 11 o'clock. This looks to be some magenta and magenta-blue, and coupled with the yellows and oranges this places this coin in the second cycle of color.
In the reverse there is a little more spectrum with some magenta-blue, also late second cycle toning.
