Comments: For many toned coin collectors this would not be a good coin, but to us it speaks volumes about surviving in New Orleans in the 1880s. To us it shows a lot of moisture damage and the darkened color may be more from moisture and less from oxidation.
The VAM identification is only visible under magnification because of the heavy toning.
Speculative History
As mentioned above, this just looks like a Mint bag survivor that hung around in the basement of the New Orleans Mint. For all we know it is a victim of a hurricane. But for sure it has seen a lot of moisture.

Missing VAMs
It is easy to mistake darkened for later cycle toning, but in the case we think it is the opposite. The true color is lighter cyan, browns, and tans. There are all first cycle and early second cycle colors. The dark overall color may be dirt and moisture damage, which is different.
