Comments: We had several discussions about this coin on on-line web sites. It became obvious that some loved and and a lot hated it. We think the coin is a good teaching tool about color spectrum and that it fits into the right grade.
VAM 13 is not difficult to identify with the unique mint mark doubling. We have examples in a number of grades from AU 50 to MS 64. When acquired this was our highest graded coin.
Speculative History
Like many others, this just looks like a Mint bag survivor that hung around in the basement of the New Orleans Mint. For all we know it is a victim of a hurricane. But for sure it has seen a lot of moisture and there appears to be a good bit of texture from the bag on the cheek and ear.
Stages and Colors
There is some black on the obverse which would indicate that this coin had long exposure to a reagent, but it can also be dirt or a mixture. There is bright yellow, burgundy, green, and some deep teal.
