Die/VAM Matrix
VAM 51 - Doubled 18, Tripled Left Wreath, Doubled Legend, Clashed Obverse us is a pairing of Obverse Die 15 with Reverse Die p. As of May 2021 we have only five examples of VAM 51, so not a lot of material to work with. The die cracks actually show best on an Almost Uncirculated 58 example. From the image below you can see that there is some minimal cracking in the stars beyond Liberty's nose at the rim. This is a common weak point in the dies.
Many VAM 51 coins we have located are below mint state, so obviously these made it into circulation in the New Orleans area. Even though these coins have die cracks, the VAM markings are so easily identified that they will often come before any more detailed examination.
Die cracks are shown in green and die breaks in red. Click on any image for a larger view.
