VAM 71 Dies

VAM 71 - Doubled 18-1, Triple Left Wreath, Double Legend, O Tilted Left is a pairing of Obverse Die 48 with Reverse Die p.  As of May 2021 we have only four examples of VAM 71, so not a lot of material to work with.   The die cracks show best on the discovery coin which is ungraded.  From the image below you can see that there is some minimal cracking in the stars beyond Liberty's nose at the rim.  This is a common weak point in the dies.  But the cracking across the head and cap is unusual and indicates a greater failure of the die.

The reverse of the discovery coin shows no die cracks unless they are obscured by the toning and we just cannot pick it up.

When examining our inventory for VAM 71 coins we hit a bit of a roadblock once we got past the discovery coin.  The other three coins seem to definitely have the VAM 71 obverse, but not necessarily the reverse.  So we may have only the discovery coin to study.

Die cracks are shown in green and die breaks in red.  Click on any image for a larger view.
