Die/VAM Matrix
VAM 18 - Doubled 18, Die Gouge DOL is a pairing of Obverse Die 10 with Reverse Die a. Reverse Die a with the die gouge in DOL of DOLLAR is seen on five VAMs: 1B1, 1B2, 18, 43, and 49. As of January 2018 we have five examples of VAM 18 for examination, so the VAM is readily available in many grades ranging from Almost Uncirculated 50 through Mint State 62.
All of our coins show signs of faint obverse die cracks, and the hair curls would indicate that this is an early use of the die before any repolishing. None of our examples show reverse die cracks but we believe that this is the same physical die as the one used for VAMs 1B1 and 1B2.
Die cracks are shown in green and die breaks in red. Click on any image for a larger view.
