Comments: We have no argument with the grade of this coin and think it appropriate for the wear pattern. However, given the discoloration on the reverse we were a little surprised it graded.
Usually a crescent discoloration is associated with coins stored in bags, and while this is not impossible it would seem to be unusual.
Coins were placed into circulation and returned to the Mint, especially in New Orleans. We recently saw a coin we believe to be a Poor 01 grade in a GSA soft pack, so it is not impossible for this to be Mint bag toning.
Only the characteristics of the "Pitted Ear" allow this VAM to be identified. Because there is pitting in the deepest recesses of the ear they are preserved through the wear.
