Comments:  The fields and contract to the devices tell us that prior to circulation this was probably either a PL or DMPL coin.  It is a shame because that would make it a really desirable VAM 1D.  We have a number of VAM 1D coins because they are so desirable and easy to spot.  If you ask people to name their favorite 1881-O VAM, this one comes to mind first.

 

Even though circulated this is still a very nice coin and a welcomed addition to our collection.  The eye socket deterioration is heavier than on many other examples in our collection, but that is a die issue and not a function of wear.
