Comments:  This coin prior to circulation was probably a PL or DMPL variety.  Even at this grade it retains some reflectivity in the fields on both the obverse and reverse.  The wear seems appropriate to the grade and we would rate it in the upper part of the AU 55 grade.

 

We have several VAM 55 examples and they are all circulated.  Our assumption is that bags of these coins made it out of the Mint and went into circulation in the 1880s since it is difficult to believe someone would have obtained one later and circulated it.
